Not everyone in Japan was happy with the rapid and radical transformation of society that was taking place under the Meiji. One group that partially  felt threatened was the Samurai class, who the Meiji had ordered to disband and forcibly took their prized swords. The reacted by starting a large rebellion and bloody guerrilla war in with the samurai were disposed of. This conflict called the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877.
